HISTORY

THE LEGACY LEO GASSELING CREATED

It all began when William Gasseling Sr, emigrated from Holland to settle in the Yakima Valley, there he
came to establish a family Hop farm after his arrival in 1910. By 1927 he had successfully established his
own Hop farm, using horse power has his sole means of farming. By 1947, Leo Gasseling, the youngest
of three boys, started farming from the original homestead; which today remains as Leo Gasseling and
Sons. Having enjoyed his father’s tradition of using horse power, Leo Gasseling clung to tradition and
continued to cultivate in the same manner. By 1944, Leo married the love of his life, Theresa
Hornsberger which resulted in the birth of 7 children. This began the start of five generations of family
hop farming in the Yakima Valley.

Leo Gasseling was mainly known for his hops, but equally known for his Clydesdale horses. You could
often find Leo with this team of horses at the Yakima State Fair, Nile Valley Days, or countless hay rides
and even in the local paper. This was his true passion!

Today, LGS is focused on producing high quality hops with the utmost efficiency. Due to this culture,
accolades continue to be given due to the current practices of LGS; not only in growing but their focus
on employees, which many have remained for decades.

LGS looks forward too many more generations of Hop Growing in the Yakima Valley, whom will carry on
the farming tradition in the new age.
